Last Saturday, we linked up with Joey Miller and Niki Kangas of the Telegraph Hiking Club for a moderate hike through the Donner Tunnels in Truckee, California. You begin the hike at the historic "China Wall", a 75 foot high hand built wall by, you guessed it, Chinese laborers. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the Petroglyphs, They're faint and can be hard to spot if you're not looking out for them. Once on top of the wall, proceed through the tunnels for the 4 mile straight through hike. Be sure to bring a head lamp or flash light as there is minimal to zero light in many parts of the tunnels. Also, bring water proof shoes. The floor of the tunnels are a constant running stream of ice melt that can get as deep as 3 to 4 inches in some parts.
This was a great destination for our group. We had a blast trekking the tunnels and climbing rocks at the end of the tunnels. We even took an hour on top of the last tunnel to take in the view of Donner Lake and to soak up some well needed sunlight! Special thanks to New Belgium Brewing Co for providing us with some well deserved "Summit Beers". Every hiker deserves an award for conquering the trail.
This trail is highly recommended and is perfect for beginners.
