On a 0.7-square-mile island 20 miles off the Maine coast, one mile south of Matinicus Island, a small solar cabin thrives. The Porter Cottage was designed by Alex Scott Porter Design for her father who was sitting on the lot for over twenty years. After much mulling, Bruce Porter decided on a simple, locally supplied interior with an anything but typical Maine-style exterior. And to add to the unique design, the cabin is powered by solar panels, minus the two appliances that run on propane. It's a luxurious home totally off the grid.
